Geography school trips to Tenerife

The largest Canary Island, Tenerife’s volcanic landscapes, rocky shores and sandy beach resorts create exciting opportunities for in-depth Geography studies. Through hands-on fieldwork, groups can better understand the island’s contrasting landscapes and investigate the reasons behind its arid and Mediterranean ecosystems. A highlight is the cable car ride to the summit of Mount Teide, allowing you to survey the island’s dramatic lava fields. To extend your group’s understanding of tectonics further, experience Tenerife’s sulphurous vents, venture down underground lava tubes, and ask your students how dormant the island really is. Through an understanding of geography and the environment, students will be able to learn more about the impacts to this area with a Geography trip to Tenerife.

Excursions

Banana Plantation

Explore the heritage of one of the most popular fruits in the world with a visit to one of Tenerife’s banana plantations. Here, your group will learn how these remarkable farms overcame difficult agricultural conditions to become a thriving success. While sampling the bananas, students will discover the fruit’s intensity of flavour, which is unique to the Canary Islands.

Cable Car up Mount Teide

An icon of the Canary Islands, and Tenerife’s most spectacular natural feature, Mount Teide dominates the skyline of the island. Although the volcano can be seen from anywhere, we recommend heading straight up to the mountain’s peak, where you can see the nearby islands of La Gomera, La Palma and Gran Canaria.

Guided Visit to Teide Observatory

The Canary Islands are one of the three best places in the world to observe the sky, with Tenerife’s Teide Observatory the grandest in the archipelago – located at an altitude of 2,390 metres. Here, students can discover the secrets of this amazing scientific institution, learn more about astronomy, visit the inside of a professional telescope, and even observe the Sun through solar telescopes – all of which we know they’ll love.

Cuevas del Viento – Volcanic Tunnels

Explore the largest lava tube system in Europe at the Cuevas del Viento, which is located in the north of the island and possesses more than 17 kilometres of underground passages. We’ve seen students amazed by the caves, and no wonder – eagle-eyed visitors may even spot fossils or bones, as well as the caves’ lava pits and geological terraces.

Catamaran Cruise

One of our favourite excursions in Tenerife, a catamaran cruise off the coast into the Atlantic Ocean bestows many gifts courtesy of its glass bottomed panels. Guests on this excursion may spot whales and dolphins frolicking in the water, as well as fish and aquatic life native to the Canaries.

Casas Bioclimáticas (ITER)

Combining recycled materials with the island’s bounty of renewable energy, Casas Bioclimáticas is unlike anything you’ll see elsewhere on the island. Stroll around the technological walkway to learn about the different kinds of renewable energies, then discover more about a green future for our environment at ITER’s visitor centre. Regardless of the time spent here, there's plenty to fascinate your group.

Piramides de Guimar Ethnographic Park

Uncover the mystery of these six rectangular pyramid-shaped, terraced structures at the Pyramids of Guimar, which several ethnographers have hypothesised over since their excavation more than 30 years ago. In the information centre, you can also find out about explorer Theo Heyerdahl’s research trips, including his findings in the nearby Guanche cave.

Los Gigantes

Home to a set of giant rock formations that rise from the sea to a height of 800 metres, the resort town of Los Gigantes has been designed and constructed to blend in with its incredible surroundings. The cliffs are one of the island’s major tourist attractions, and students who visit can study the natural coastlines and how the pressures of tourism have affected the area.

Aqualand

A huge open-air complex with slides, tube rides and a dolphinarium, Aqualand offers the perfect excursion to cool off in the Spanish summer heat. Whether they’re looking to relax in the park’s lazy river or for more adrenaline-filled water rides, we know your students will love a day to let loose here.
