Set in the Vendée countryside in Western France, Puy du Fou is unlike any other school trip destination. Rather than rides, this theme park is built around large-scale historical displays — bringing periods from the Roman era through to the 20th century to life through live performance, intricate sets, and cinematic staging (think chariot races in vast arenas, Viking invasions complete with full-scale ships, and carefully choreographed storytelling that even leaves grown-ups completely awestruck).
It’s this focus on immersive, narrative-led experiences that makes Puy du Fou particularly impactful for school groups. Here, students follow stories that help contextualise key historical periods, sparking curiosity beyond the classroom. With multiple shows running throughout the day, well-organised facilities, and a layout designed to manage large groups efficiently, there's little wonder it's consistently voted France's favourite theme park.
Recently, two of our sales team, Laura and Helen, visited with their own children to experience it firsthand. Below, Helen shares her insights in a Q&A— covering everything from travel and practicalities to standout moments and how it resonated with their children.

Q&A with Helen Nicholls, Account Manager
What age(s) are your children?
11 (Year 6) and 7 (Year 2)
How long did you go to Puy du Fou for?
We spent 4 days in total — 2 full days in the park, plus a few hours on the Friday morning before heading home. You could cover most of the shows in 2 days, but it would feel quite full-on. Three days allows for a much more relaxed pace, with time to enjoy everything without rushing.
How was the journey? Did you fly/drive?
We flew from Stansted, which worked best for us timing-wise, into Nantes. From there, it’s only about an hour to the park, so very straightforward. There are also plenty of alternatives, including ferry and Eurotunnel options, which would work well for groups.
Was it part of a larger trip with other excursions?
My visit was focused solely on Puy du Fou. Laura travelled slightly earlier and combined her visit with stops at some of the hotels we use for groups in Cholet, which worked well from a planning perspective.
What were some particular highlights of the visit?
The attention to detail across the entire park really stood out, along with the unexpected moments within the shows themselves. The overall flow of the park was also impressive — it’s very well organised, and even with lots of visitors, it never felt overly busy.
How was food/amenities at Puy du Fou?
There’s a really strong range of options, with around 28 places to eat including both sit-down restaurants and quicker, grab-and-go choices. There’s something to suit all preferences, and plenty of picnic areas too, which is ideal for school groups bringing packed lunches.

Were there any difficulties with the shows being in French?
There’s a very helpful app that provides English translations, making it easy to follow along where needed. That said, many of the shows are so visual that you can understand and enjoy them without translation. Overall it didn’t feel like a barrier.
Did you feel like it gave a suitable educational experience for children? What ages would you say it’s most suitable for?
It works really well for both children and adults, with something for everyone. I’d say it’s particularly well suited to Year 5 and Year 6, and potentially Year 7. While the focus is more on French history, the way it’s presented still encourages curiosity and engagement.
What were the children's favourite part of visiting Puy du Fou?
Olivia loved the bird show — it was something completely different to anything she’d seen before. Jesse’s standout moments were the Vikings and King Arthur, especially when the round table was revealed on stage.
Both of them — and Mum too — were completely amazed by the night show, especially the moments where performers rose from the water. It felt genuinely magical.
