Come Christmastime, more than 100 stalls surround the Cathedral and Town Hall in Germany's westernmost city of Aachen, transforming it into a magical city of lights. Best known for its Cathedral and Aachener Printen speciality (which is similar to gingerbread), Aachen is also home to the Suermondt Ludwig Museum and Couven Museum – nearby excursions that we've found are really popular with school groups.

Built by order of Emperor Charlemagne early in the 9th century, the cathedral is one of the most impressive in Germany – if not the world.
