OUR SUMMARY
Brilliant ski area with some of the best skiing
in the Southern Alps. Pretty traditional villages
and a purpose built resort with 170kms of snow sure
slopes.
This brilliant,170km ski area serves up some of
the best skiing in the Southern French Alps. The
fully linked circuit includes some pretty, traditional
villages, purpose-built of Vars and attractive Risoul,
over the mountain ridge.
Equity groups stay in the village of Vars St Marcellin,
close to the new super-fast chair that goes straight
to the top of the ridge from where you can ski over
to Risoul or back down to Vars. The excellent ski
bus service circulates about every 10mins and Vars
Les Cloux is close enough for an evening out. On
the other side of the valley are more lifts so you
can start from either side. Vars has a lot of east
facing slopes, which catch the morning sun and are
great in the morning. Risoul's slopes mostly face
north and are good in the late afternoon. You can
usually get good, crisp snow all day but you have
the added security of powerful, modern snow-making.
Vars is simply fantastic for intermediates, who
have enormous, swooping reds and blues through wonderful
scenery. These rugged mountains are very different
to the manicured prettiness of the Haute Savoie
but just as attractive. The deep larch forest gives
welcome shelter and visibility in heavy weather.
Beginners are also well catered for on the village
nursery slopes and wide, easy blues at altitude.
The Risoul links will be manageable by most by the
end of the week and give a great sense of achievement.
Advanced skiers will also be fine but real experts
will have to make do with the steep stuff between
the two resorts.
