The aprés ski is so well known that the quality of the skiing has sometimes been overlooked but Sauze has always been one of Italy's best, and its combination of easy and intermediate skiing is excellent for school groups. The village is quite high at 1509m and faces a wide valley with glorious views. The 120kms of north and west facing runs are quite superb and the lifts are mostly chairs. There is some fair beginners skiing, and the very experienced ski school is great, but Sauze is decisively best for intermediates, with 28 blue or red runs of rare beauty, winding entertainingly through heavy forest which also provides good protection in bad weather. The rest of the Milky Way is accessible to advanced skiers, and the really keen can ski all the way to Montgenevre in France on a cheap extension pass.
Sauze has a picturesque quarter built of slate and stone with mediaeval church and traditional market. The cobbled streets are lined with shops and restaurants. Although many locals speak English, Sauze d'Oulx is still a typical Piemonte village. Sauze is still lively but recent efforts to broaden its appeal enable families and school groups to enjoy it as well.

Sauze has looks, life, lots to do and inexhaustible après ski at reasonable prices.

HOTEL PALACE (cap 80)
The Palace is in the main square, convenient for shops, night life and ski bus. If you prefer a warm-up walk, the main village chairs are 5,10 or 15mins and we can book a ski store by the lifts at £7.50 per week. Coaches cannot enter the main square so there is a 5min walk on transfer days. We have a minibus for the luggage.
The Palace is a 3 star hotel which we would say should be a 2 star. It was built in the 60's and has large public areas and good rooms. It's fine but a little dated and deserves a makeover. The new owners are friendly, keen and the food is good. All bedrooms have private facilities, 'phone and plenty of storage.
• large lounge
• American bar
• buffet at breakfast and dinner
• antipasti buffet at dinner

"All the reps were fantastic. Welcoming and helpful. You could not ask for better."
