Endless, high altitude cruising
•
Ski the Matterhorn, it's easy!
Even the world-weary who have skied everywhere
else, can't suppress a sharp intake of breath
on first sighting the legendary Matterhorn, that
giant pyramid of rock which has fatally attracted
the foolhardy down the centuries. All the more
surprising that the skiing is a bit of a doddle!
Cervinia is the perfect choice for beginners and
intermediates, who enjoy the gargantuan mileage,
fabulous snow and the cheap £15 extension
to famous Zermatt in Switzerland.
Effortless, high altitude cruising is a speciality
and there's mile after mile of long, flattering
runs on wonderful snow. From Plateau Rosa down
to Valtournenche it's 22km with only a short drag
breaking the journey. That's 2000m vertical! Not
really vertical though, Italian grading is not
so stiff as French or Austrian, and a strong intermediate
can just about manage all of it.
This is as snowsure an area as any ski area in
Europe. The height and glaciers virtually guarantee
good conditions. There is a classic climbing and
ski tradition and plenty of character.
Valtournenche is a very sleepy farming village,
and its new gondola puts it firmly on the ski
map. Valtournenche is 8kms down the valley from
Cervinia and is fully integrated by both lift
and piste.

HOTEL
MONTANA 2* (cap 160)
•
Family run hotel
•
Warm and friendly atmosphere
•
Tons of charm and character

This is a delightful hotel in the centre of Valtournenche
about 5 mins drive from the main telecabina. This new lift
goes to great snow and a lovely beginners area at 2245m. From
here the rest of the system joins up.
The Montana is very traditional, homely and spotless. The
owner is also the chef and the Signora takes care of business.
It's very much a family concern and you can be sure of a warm
and friendly welcome. The food is good and the dining room
is particularly pleasant. Nearby are the shops and bars of
Valtournenche.
