OUR SUMMARY
Very snow-sure, high altitude skiing with glacier. Wonderful for beginners and early intermediates. Ambitious lift company with big plans. Friendly, convenient, well-equipped village.

Tonale has been popular with schools for decades for the simple reason that it is probably the best beginners' resort there is. It's built high on a pass, above the trees, with gentle slopes shelving obligingly either side, so visibility is unimpeded and supervision is easy. The gullies between the runs are all skiable so there's much more than the official mileage on offer. It's all easy except for a couple of exciting reds and a black. The glacier is never open when the snow is good but the bowl below it is interesting, and the black run, which can be managed by keen intermediates, is fabulous. The modern lifts are easy to use even for beginners, and there is hardly any walking or queuing.
The pass includes Ponte di Legno which can be reached by confident snow-ploughers on a magical forest trail past little farms and a Husky Dog training school. Ponte di Legno is a beautiful old town with pretty tree-lined runs. Your pass includes the swimming pool and you return by free ski bus. The lifts are all hands free, so the pass stays in your pocket all week.
Tonale is a little bleak but is becoming rather smart now with many of the hotels having added a star. It's always been friendly, convenient and well-equipped.

A real village with good prices, friendly people and plenty to do.

HOTEL BIANCANEVE (cap 180)
Marvelous hotel for school groups. Only 4 mins from the centre of town and the lifts. Good food
This stark, modernist building is no oil painting, but beauty is only skin deep and the Biancaneve has a heart of gold. It's marvellous for groups.
The excellent food includes a massive self-service buffet with loads of choice including vegetarian options. You can be sure of a friendly welcome. The refurbished ground floor has masses of practical space. The décor, in rather sudden primary colours, befits the hotel's modernity and youthful appeal. It is set back off the main road about 4mins walk to the lifts and centre. We also have a slope side ski store.
Every room has shower with WC and bidet, then two bedrooms divided by a partition and sliding door. Bedroom 1 has two singles or a double. Bedroom 2 has two singles. Sometimes there is a third bedroom with 2 singles.

Superb 4 star with spacious public rooms, great views and superb facilities.

The public rooms are spacious and modern with great views and the facilities (some at a small charge) are superb. All bedrooms have satellite TV, phone and shower room with WC and bidet. The twins convert to 3's or 4's with top quality pull-out beds. The excellent food includes buffet breakfast and 3 courses at dinner.
