OUR SUMMARY
Outstandingly pretty scenery, long runs and a great snow record. Our Equity-run hotel has a perfect position in this idyllic mountain village.

"Snow pocket" may be an overworked term in ski brochures, but this quiet, unspoilt village definitely qualifies. It's situated close to Obertauern and Flachau on the Tauern Pass, and is well known all over Austria for reliable snow. This is officially the coldest and the sunniest part of Austria! The bad weather comes from both north and south so they get 2 bites of the cherry.
Long-term Equity clients will remember an uncommonly pretty area with endless blue and red runs. They are all still there but Obertauern have bought the lifts and are investing on a big scale. They like the enormous 10km runs and plan to make the Lungau one of the major ski areas in Austria. There is already close to 200km of piste on one pass, broken down into 3 areas of roughly equal size. Speiereck/Grosseck is an uncrowded, spacious area with its main lift and nursery slope are only 3 mins from our hotel. Here there is a long chairlift with a nursery run at the top. For beginners it's excellent because they can always get to good snow and the plentiful blue slopes offer good progression.
Intermediates have tremendous opportunities on interesting runs distinguished by pretty scenery and sheltered woods. There are long runs for every ability on all parts of this circuit. Advanced skiers have masses of mileage and the excitement of exploring new areas, all genuinely delightful. The last third of the run back to the village is unpisted but can be managed by mid intermediates and advanced skiers. Others can take the chair back down.
The Katschberg/Aineck area, also included on the ski pass, is linked by ski bus in about 10 mins. The lift system is very well developed here and gives a good idea of what St Michael is becoming. There is a third area, the Fanningberg, reached by skibus in about 25 mins, which is much prized by our staff, and has perhaps a little more challenge than the other areas. Finally, it's nice to have the bomb-proof snow security of Obertauern so close. It's not included on the ski pass but there's an extension available and the regular ski bus takes only 30mins.
St Michael is a beautiful village, typically Austrian, and totally unspoilt. Its quaint old buildings and narrow streets are hardly touched by the 20th century. There are plenty of shops, bars and those enticing cafés with the old fashioned pastries. This area is particularly well-endowed with mountain restaurants.

Lovely little Austrian village, totally authentic, with old buildings and cobbled, narrow streets. Fairly lively at night.

Equity run hotel
Pension Pankratz (cap 54)
One of our most successful Equity-run hotels, it has a brilliant position, a warm and traditional atmosphere and good food.

The position is perfect. Quiet, so no immediate temptations for school children, but with the attractions of the village only 5mins walk. The St Michael chairlift is a 4min walk and you can ski back over a meadow to within 200m of the hotel. For the other ski areas the ski bus stops outside every half hour in the early morning and late afternoon.
The Pankratz is a typically Austrian pension; cosy, well kept and attractively decorated. The public areas are excellent. There's a pleasant bar with alcoves, stuberl and TV; and a relaxation area with sauna, WC, solarium and exercise bike. Traditional mountain artefacts abound, including an old fashioned ceramic stove, ski trophies, and a variety of stuffed and mounted wild life. There are tremendous views.

All the bedrooms except 2 have shower and WC and are for 2, 3 or 4, sometimes with bunks. Most of the bedrooms have panelling, wooden floors and rugs. There's also an apartment sleeping 5 or 6 in 2 bedrooms sharing 1 bathroom. As an Equity-run hotel you can be sure of high standards good food and warm hospitality.

BUDGET COACH
HOTEL ZUM WEISSENSTEIN 3star (cap 105)
A friendly family run hotel with good food. Located close to the centre and chairlift.

This excellent hotel is now a 3 star having just been refurbished. It is a typical, rambling Austrian chalet, close to the centre of the village, and 5mins walk from the village chair. You take a little path from behind the hotel.
The hotel is very well-run by Linde and Rudi Pankratz, who are known for their hospitality and friendliness, and who also own our Pension Pankratz. The hotel has a large relaxation area, lounge and bar. The food is good.
