OUR SUMMARY

An exquisite village that links to a 200km ski area and an excellent choice for coach groups. We use a wonderful school party hotel.

Mauterndorf is on the same system as St Michael (page 48) and therefore shares the same colossal 200km ski pass. The fantastic, new 8 person gondola has revolutionised the skiing. You reach the gondola by coach or ski bus in 5mins, then you are at the mid station in no time, which offers terrific skiing in good conditions. Beginners and intermediates can ski to St Michael on long, easy runs in good snow, and return all the way to Mauterndorf on a new blue. There are village lifts as well but these are rarely used now. Fanningberg (20mins) and Katschberg (20mins) are included on the pass and both provide an enjoyable day. Obertauern is also 20mins, and although it's not included on the pass, it's reassuring to have such a snow-sure resort so close by.
Mauterndorf is an absolutely ravishing village, one of the prettiest in Salzburgerland, and we can't think of anywhere better for the "real" Austria. Established since Roman times, it has a 13c castle, good shops and a fascinating historic centre. Indeed our hotel is an historic building in its own right. All the buildings are painted in warm, harmonious pastel colours and have step gables and decorative murals.

Completely genuine and charming Salzburgerland village. Not touristy but unspoilt and authentic. Fairly quiet, but with a few bars and cafés.

Gasthaus Mauser-Muhltaler (cap 98)

Good family-run gasthaus with excellent food in a traditional 17c building.
We rightly recommend this hotel for school parties.
The Mauser-Muhltaler is a family Gasthaus in the centre of Mauterndorf, in a graceful, tree-lined street, opposite the church. The village gondola is 5mins by coach or skibus which stops outside.
The hotel is a remarkable 17c building which once was a brewery although it looks almost ecclesiastical with its arches and vaulted corridors.

It is beautifully kept. All the bedrooms are uniform. They have shower, WC, wash basin, 2 or 3 sets of strong bunks, an open locker for each bed, then a set of table and chairs. The furniture is substantial, tasteful and well made. Everything is spotlessly clean. There are a few 10 and 8 bedded rooms all with lots of storage space. There are 2 dining rooms and one of them is extraordinary. It is decorated in ornate, sombre, heavy wood and has an ancient ceramic stove with figurines. The food is very good here. The lady of the house speaks excellent English and is very friendly.
This excellent Gasthaus is utilitarian but not hostel-like; well-kept but warm and friendly; beautifully furnished, but robust and child-proof. In other words, it's exactly right for a school party.
all bedrooms with shower and WC recreation area 2 dining rooms excellent food very friendly
