OUR SUMMARY
"A classic Austrian resort, almost entirely intermediate,
with a celebrated downhill and 350 snow cannons. Our accommodation
is exceptional."
|
Bad
Kleinkirchheim, or more popularly BKK, is the
home of Austrian ski legend Franz Klammer, the
greatest downhill racer of all time, who made
his reputation here and latterly designed the
World Cup downhill course. It's not an over-glamorous
resort though, fame hasn't gone to its head, and
so you can expect traditional Carinthian warmth
and a friendly welcome.
The skiing is fantastic for intermediates with
over 75% of the runs being blue or red. It spreads
over 2 connected areas. St Oswald has some gentle,
cruising runs including a long, looping blue from
the top of the mountain right to the valley floor,
which is a guaranteed thigh-burner for even the
freshest legs. The more testing skiing is on the
BKK side, where good intermediates and advanced
skiers will enjoy exciting, long reds through
the trees, a couple of testing blacks and the
famous World Cup downhill, designed by Franz Klammer,
which is a "must-do" for intermediates
by the end of the week. It's a long, beautiful
and testing run with a series of camel humps that
are great fun when skied at a sane speed. Both
BKK and St Oswald have good village nursery slopes
and numerous blue runs providing excellent progression
for beginners. Over 50km is covered by snow cannons!
BKK loves snowboarders. There's a floodlit park
and the Crazy Carving snowboard school.
Like all Austrian resorts, the fun doesn't stop
when the lifts close. There are plenty of après
ski and non-ski activities to keep everyone busy
in the pleasant old spa town of BKK. St Oswald
is a quiet hamlet and School groups can use their
coach for popping in and out to BKK. Party Leaders
can take cheap taxis for individual visits. It's
ideal for schools.

A good mixture of après ski. BKK is well
equipped for both winter and summer tourism. St
Oswald is very small and quiet.

BUDGET
COACH
ST OSWALD FARMHOUSE VILLAGE
3 star equivalent (cap150)
Fantastic value and quality. Full board in very well appointed
apartments at a really good price! A charming village of farmhouse
chalets near the lifts.
The St Oswald Farmhouse Village is located in the quiet hamlet
of St Oswald, just 4kms from the centre of BKK. One of the
main BKK gondolas is only 250m. An easier one for beginners
is 2km and is served by free skibus.
School groups have their own coach of course but for individual
visits, taxis are cheap to BKK at only £3-£5 per
trip.
This charming, purpose-built farmhouse village comprises free-standing
chalets, each of which contains 4 apartments, 2 on the upper
floor, 2 on the ground floor. All the apartments contain either
4 or 6 beds so a chalet can take between 14 and 24. Supervision
is easy. The standard of accommodation is superb, at least
the equivalent of 3 star, and there's plenty of space. They
have been very successful in season 2003/4.
4-bedded apartment.
These have a spacious living room with pine panels, wood-fired
stove, dining table, chairs, wardrobe, shelving, WC, shower-room
and 2 sofa beds. There's a superb bedroom containing 2 single
beds, either in an L-shape or pushed together in an Austrian-twin
arrangement. The cooking appliances in the well-equipped kitchen
are disconnected for school groups.
6-bedded apartment
As above with a second bedroom containing 2 single beds in
an Austrian twin arrangement.
Reception is in a separate chalet with a little shop. Another
chalet houses the restaurant and function room. The food is
excellent and includes a breakfast buffet and 3-course dinner
with of main course and salad buffet. A third chalet is the
Kids Club, run by qualified child carers who use the gentle
slope next door for tobogganing and fun and games. This is
a useful facility for Party Leaders with young children.
Finally, the health suite chalet has a large sauna, power
showers and relaxation area.
