This historic alpine town is also one of Italy's top resorts with some absolutely splendid skiing over a wide, varied and panoramic area. Even so, prices in the charming, pedestrianised centre are reasonable and there are Saturday and Thursday markets too. Bardonecchia lies in a spacious valley and is well known for wide, sunny slopes and scenic, tree-lined runs. It has quite exceptional skiing for strong beginners up to good intermediates. The height, snowmaking and slopes of all directions ensure good conditions throughout the season. Although the lift system features lots of drags it's very well designed and is usually queue-free.

Enthusiastic piste bashers are in paradise. The 2 main areas of Campo Smith and Melezet provide continual changes of scene and fully connect to provide exhilaration for everyone. The pass also includes Jafferau which must not be missed. This is a tall, snowsure area connected in 7 mins by frequent and free ski bus. Jefferau has brilliant skiing above and below the tree line.

There are many strategically placed restaurants because in Italy skiing means more than lifts and pistes. In fact the whole area is notably pleasant, characterful and very Italian.

Bardonecchia has been an important town since Roman times so has a colourful history and plenty of character. There is a nice sprinkling of bars, cafes and pizzerias.

Hotel Asplenia (cap 60)

This pleasant 3 star hotel is popular every year. The ski bus stops outside but you will only need it on the first day because our own ski and boot store at Campo Smith converts a tough 7min slog in ski boots to a pleasant loosener in street shoes. There's a little river behind the hotel and good views of the mountains. The food and hospitality have always been exceptional and still are.
Half the bedrooms have balcony and all have telephone and private facilities. 4 apartments have a big old fashioned bathroom and 2 bedrooms. The official standard is 3 star but we think the rooms are probably closer to a 2 star although the newly refurbished public rooms are 3 star. We must say its as good as any hotel in our brochure for hospitality and rebooking requests.
