On this dual-centre tour your students will have the opportunity to explore two cities that have overcome adversity to become thriving cultural hubs. The cobblestone streets, rich history and friendly locals make Krakow a ‘must visit’ destination whilst the museums, galleries and monuments in Berlin are thought-provoking and inspiring.

    • Afternoon visit to the Story of Berlin museum, an interactive museum charting the city’s history. Visit the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate in the evening.

    • Today will focus on the impact of the Berlin Wall and its fall. This morning students will visit the German Historical Museum to study the background to Berlin and World War Two and the Cold War. Afterwards they will continue to Checkpoint Charlie and the DDR Museum where students will learn about everyday life in the GDR as well as the defences of the Berlin Wall itself. The group will then move on to the Berlin Wall Memorial to gain a greater insight into the significance of this national icon.

    • Today, students will have the opportunity to explore the culture of the oppressive Cold War era and its surveillance operations. The day begins at the Allied Museum which follows the city’s history from 1945 to 1990. In the afternoon there will be the chance to visit the old Eastern sector at the Stasi museum, exploring the ways in which the East German regime controlled the people, followed by a visit to Berlin-Hohenschonhausen Memorial, formerly the political prison of the Stasi.

    • Start the day early with a visit to the Jewish Museum and learn about the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. This is then followed up with a visit Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp where students will be able to reinforce their learning from this morning with first-hand experience of the camp and the treatment of those who were sent there.

    • Spend the day in Potsdam. A few miles west of Berlin, Potsdam has an ideal setting consisting of natural wooded sites which is dotted with lakes and criss-crossed by canals and arms of the Havel River. This beautiful area features various palaces and pavilions built between 1744 and 1860.

    • Free time to show at Alexander Alexanderplatz – transfer to Krakow. Following your morning coach transfer to Krakow, you will be transferred to you accommodation allowing for an on route orientation of the local areas. Once settled in, students will visit Kazimierz the historical centre of Krakow’s Jewish religious and social life. The tour highlights a number of key monuments in the local area including the Old Synagogue and Remuh cemetery allowing students to evaluate the importance of the Jewish faith in Krakow.

    • Students will visit Auschwitz-Birkenau, perhaps the most well-known of the Nazi concentration camps. On sight, students will be able to view first hand many of the original buildings and will experience first-hand the inner workings of the sight as well as the impact that this had on the local and wider communities. An afternoon visit to the Jewish museum which is currently housed in a renaissance synagogue will allow students to develop their understanding of Jewish heritage. The visit will allow students to contrast their visit to Auschwitz with the legacy of the Jewish faith.

    • A visit to Schindler’s Factory, which re opened in 2010, tells the story of Schindler and his involvement with both the Jewish population and the Nazi Regime. Students are able to discover examples of resistance to the Nazi regime as well as making links to popular culture through the Spielberg film ‘Schindler’s List’. The afternoon allows students the opportunity to understand why Krakow and Wieliczka were important sites even before the Nazi occupation of Poland. The Wieliczka salt mines which have been working for over 700 year include a museum tour between 64 and 135 metres below ground.

    • This morning’s visit to Wawel Cathedral where Polish Kings were crowned and buried until the beginning of the 17th Century offer students the chance to develop their understanding of the Royalty within Europe. Transfer to the airport for you return flight home.
