Equity Battlefields Tour Programme to be featured on BBC

In the past two years Equity have taken over 4100 students and teachers from 1300 schools across the UK on the government funded First World War Battlefields Tour in partnership with UCL Institute of Education.

In the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, last month, 11 schools travelled to the Western Front and will be featured in a special series of BBC Newsround reports marking the anniversary. The series is scheduled to air 3 times a day this week leading up to July 1st.

Presenter Martin Dougan interviewed a number of students who were on the trip as they made personal pilgrimages to pay their respects to local soldiers who fell in the First World War. During 2016 there will be special emphasis placed on commemorating the Battle of the Somme and its strategic importance.

Here at Equity we’re proud to be part of this programme giving all students the opportunity to visit the battlefields in Ypres and the Somme. There is no better way for students to develop a personal connection to the First World War than through visiting the memorials and graves 100 years on, as well as taking part in the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate.

Places are still available on tours departing in September, October and November 2016. Take a look on the Equity website for more information on whether your school is eligible and upcoming departure dates.

To watch the featured Battlefields programme tune into BBC Newsround weekdays at 7:40am, 8:15am and 4:20pm and weekends 8:55am, 11:55am and 1:55pm.The first report has already launched and you can watch it here.
