Equity Battlefields Tour Programme to be featured on BBC

In the past two years Equity have taken over 4100 students and teachers from 1300 schools across the UK on the government funded First World War Battlefields Tour in partnership with UCL Institute of Education.

In the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, last month, 11 schools travelled to the Western Front and will be featured in a special series of BBC Newsround reports marking the anniversary. The series is scheduled to air 3 times a day this week leading up to July 1st.

Presenter Martin Dougan interviewed a number of students who were on the trip as they made personal pilgrimages to pay their respects to local soldiers who fell in the First World War. During 2016 there will be special emphasis placed on commemorating the Battle of the Somme and its strategic importance.

Here at Equity we’re proud to be part of this programme giving all students the opportunity to visit the battlefields in Ypres and the Somme. There is no better way for students to develop a personal connection to the First World War than through visiting the memorials and graves 100 years on, as well as taking part in the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate.

Places are still available on tours departing in September, October and November 2016. Take a look on the Equity website for more information on whether your school is eligible and upcoming departure dates.

To watch the featured Battlefields programme tune into BBC Newsround weekdays at 7:40am, 8:15am and 4:20pm and weekends 8:55am, 11:55am and 1:55pm.The first report has already launched and you can watch it here.

So long, farewell, we will miss you Hotel Beausoleil!

The Hotel Beausoleil has long been a favourite for Equity school groups, RocketSki travellers and many staff who enjoyed winter season positions.

In one of the best slopeside positions in Alpe d’Huez, with a stunning sun terrace, the hotel was a flagship building within the resort. For over 17 ski seasons with Equity (during this time also operating as; STS School Travel Service, SkiPlan & Equity School Ski) it's bar and terrace were enjoyed by many skiiers who came off the slopes to sit in the sun, enjoying a drink and some fantastic food.

Built in 1960, the hotel is being knocked down and replaced with chalet style apartments. But the memories of the hotel will not be forgotten; whether it be the smiles from Equity students having completed their first blue run, karaoke and quiz nights or sunny afternoons on the terrace.

Here are some of the best memories from staff at Equity who have strong connections with this fabulous hotel...

My best memory of the Beausoleil is…
... the view from my bedroom at the top of the hotel. Such a great terrace to have a drink when the sun was out.

- David Hewitt (Hotel Manager (2009-10); Currently: Equity Accounts Payable Clerk)

Hotel Beausoleil

I’ll really miss the Beausoleil because…
...many of our groups had such an affinity with this hotel. We had both Equity groups and RocketSki guests who had been coming to the Beau for many many years and were genuinely upset that the hotel would no longer be there. For my first ski season, I was proud to run the Beausoleil and felt quite privileged to be a part of the last season ever in the hotel.

- Zara Longlands (Beausoleil Hotel Manager 15-16 season; Currently: Chateau Manager)

My best memory of the Beausoleil is…
... eating lunch on the terrace on Christmas day with the sun beaming down on us!

-Jennifer Williams (Equity Seasonnaire; Currently Equity Ski Sales Support )

Hotel Beausoleil

I’ll really miss the Beausoleil because…
There was nowhere better to sit after a day skiing and having a few apres-ski drinks in the sun. Best sun terrace in the Alps and when we had live music playing, it was a cracking place to be.

- Ruaridh Wightman (Overseas Operations Manager, then and now.)

My best memory of the Beausoleil is…
...learning to play curling with some pupils and teachers during the winter Olympics.

I’ll really miss the Beausoleil because….
...of its location. The warm reception you always get every time I go back, it feels like ‘home’.

-Martin McGrath (Equity Seasonnaire, now Equity Overseas Contracts Specialist)
