Chemmy Alcott presents to teachers at the Club Roma

During the Easter break the Equity Ski specialists took a large group of teachers to our Equity Club properties in the Alps to inspect our Clubs and sample the Equity experience. On the Inspection Visit, teachers stayed in our Equity Club Roma in the quaint, Italian town of Claviere. They were taken to all of our Equity Club properties to see first-hand what the accommodation is like and skied a number of resorts. A few days into the trip the group had a personal visit from four-time Olympian and Equity ambassador Chemmy Alcott, along with her partner and Britain’s fastest downhill skier, Dougie Crawford. Dougie spent the day skiing with the group in Serre Chevalier. Unfortunately, Chemmy couldn’t join to ski with group this year, as only weeks before the trip she tore her ACL. She presented to the teachers in the evening at the hotel, highlighting her personal experience in sport, and how residential trips, such as school ski experiences, are fundamental to learning outside the classroom and helping students to develop life skills. Rob B from Llanishen High School attended the trip and said, “I just thought I would take the chance to thank you very much for…

National Schools Snowsport Week

Running from 22 – 29 April 2016, the new initiative from Snowsport England is offering free and affordable skiing and snowboarding sessions to schools, aimed at encouraging more schools to introduce their pupils to snowsports. As their preferred supplier for school ski trip, we're proud to be apart of this initiative encouraging young people to take an active interest in snowsport. The week will see a range of events on offer for schools and pupils including taster ski and snowboard sessions for all pupils, alternative snow activities such as tobogganing and tubing and even freestyle or racing taster sessions at some slopes. Graham Bell, five-time Olympian and presenter of BBC's Ski Sunday said of National Schools Snowsports Week: "There is nothing better than standing on a ski slope, the adrenaline rushing through your body as you start your descent - whether that is in the Alps or on an artificial ski slope. I wish every child could have the chance to give snowsports a go and enjoy that feeling, which is why National Schools Snowsports Week is such a great idea. Not only will children from a range of backgrounds get to give skiing or snowboarding a go, at some…

Andorra the Old (it’s far from being ancient) Featured

Setting out on my second ski repping trip, I was anxious and excited at the prospect of exploring a new country. Little did I know about Andorra before I left, but as the week progressed I soon discovered I had stumbled upon a hidden gem. Andorra is a small independent state that rests between Spain and France, the sun is ever present due to the region’s orientation to the Mediterranean. What was remarkable to myself and the 42 students, including five teachers, that followed me was how hot it was flying into Barcelona... the heat on landing was 16° degrees. This was in stark contrast to the cold and windy conditions we left behind in the UK. I faced numerous questions like, ‘Are you sure we are skiing Miss?’ and ‘How are we going to ski when there is no snow?’ Setting out on the second day taking the 20 minute gondola ride up to Grandvalira, I could see students’ restless faces scouring the mountains to see if they really would be skiing. What a delight it was to see their mouths drop at the wonder of the ski resort. Mountains caked with glistening white snow and countless slopes to…

Safety on the slopes

At Equity, we have been operating school trips for more than 82 years and safety is at the heart of everything we do. Here are some tips for a safe ski trip. 1. Conduct a thorough Risk Assessment Equity has a strong Safety Management System in place which will help you complete your risk assessment. We can also offer assistance with paperwork required by your Local Authority as well as an Inspection Visit to get to know the area and complete your specific risk assessment. We recommend the School Travel Forum’s Demystifying Risk Assessments. 2. Attend an Inspection Visit We also regularly conduct Inspection Visits for teachers so they can visit specific areas and hotels before making a decision on which resort to choose. Inspection Visit costs vary but if you go on to book a ski trip with Equity (for 40 paying places), the cost of your Inspection Visit will be subtracted from your school's final invoice. 3. Use only qualified instructors School groups on an Equity trip receive 2 lessons per day which are conducted by qualified instructors. ESF is one of France’s leading ski schools and instructors are highly qualified. While of course the mountains have an…
